Weight Loss

For many, attempting to lose weight is often a long, difficult and challenging journey. Anyone who has ever struggled with their weight will be all too familiar with the stress, anxiety and frustration that comes with this. Many people often find themselves getting into a cycle of dieting, often resulting in the inevitable self-sabotage of overeating, which leads to guilt, disappointment and low-self-esteem, which then brings about the need to return to dieting. This negative cycle is often referred as ‘yo-yo’ dieting, and unfortunately is rarely sustainable, so eventual failure is inevitable.

Most diets tend to focus on changing and adjusting diet, nutrition and exercise, therefore, most people who have tried to lose weight at some point in their lives generally know what will bring the results they require. What diets fail to do is to deal with how the person feels about food, or where their need to overeat in the first place came from. What Hypnotherapy aims to do is to change your beliefs and assumptions about food and exercise. Rather than just following a healthy eating and exercise regime, hypnotherapy helps you to change how you feel about the new routine. Rather than resenting not eating fatty and sugary foods that you thought that you could not do without, instead, you will learn to be more mindful about your habits and instead enjoy healthier choices. Hypnotherapy actually helps you to control and rewire your thinking so that your new routine feels positive and enjoyable, rather than like you are being deprived.

How does Hypnotherapy work?

The hypnotherapist will collaborate with you to help you to develop a more positive and healthy relationship with food, and exercise by targeting your unconscious mind. This will begin with an initial in depth conversation/consultation about what you hope to achieve from hypnotherapy. This will also help the therapist to understand the best way to help you reach your aims and objectives. In some cases, this may also involve some Hypno-analysis, with your permission in order to find the reasons for your negative relationship with food. Often a weight issue is purely a symptom of something else, such as stress, anxiety or low self-esteem. This helps to make the final results more long-term and permanent, as it will give you the opportunity to sub-consciously release your negative emotions related to food before offering more positive suggestions.

Why do I find it so difficult to lose weight?

There are a number of reasons why so many people try and fail to lose weight, and many of these are unconscious, therefore making it much more difficult to overcome. The use of hypnotherapy can expose the reasons whilst in hypnosis, which will allow them to release the negative emotions that have been preventing them from living a more balanced and healthy life. Some of the most common reasons for overeating are:

  • Comfort Eating: This often goes back top being a baby when we all associated comfort with getting food from our Mothers’. As life becomes more stressful with many responsibilities, many people feel themselves reverting back to that need for the comfort they associated with their Mother. For example, after a bad day they may find themselves reaching for the nearest cake, or chocolate bar because they feel ‘I deserve and need it’. Food actually becomes perceived as a form of coping mechanism that aims to satisfy the emotions, or to replace something that is missing in some way. Comfort eaters will convince themselves that they ‘need’ certain foods to make everything okay again. Invariably, it does not satisfy or solve the problem, instead there is often a feeling of self-hate and low self-esteem associated with their behaviour and perceived weakness of giving in. Hypnotherapy seeks to help you to understand your behaviour and to release and process these destructive perceived beliefs and emotions, and to replace them with more helpful and positive beliefs.

  • Eating mindlessly: Mindless eaters often find it very difficult to keep track of what they eat, and are very inclined to ‘pick’ at food while preparing dinner, or maybe finish off what the children did not eat at dinnertime. They are probably likely to snack without thinking and eat ‘on the go’ due to being busy. This type of behaviour is generally quite easy to help and adjust using hypnotherapy.

  • Unrealistic and Extreme Bans on Food: Eliminating and restricting certain foods generally serves to make them all the more appealing. The key to healthy and sustainable weight loss is to create a realistic approach to your routine and lifestyle. Hypnotherapy can help you to regain self-control and develop a more healthy relationship with food, that allows for the occasional treat.

Overall, weight issues often cause a large number of other symptoms that if they continue can dramatically affect the quality of your life, and may have a negative effect on your relationships, work and everyday life. For this reason, many people often look to hypnotherapy for a solution as it aims to address the negative thought, feelings and beliefs that are so often the underlying cause of unhealthy eating habits and lifestyle that contribute to weight gain. In order to change your body, you need to first change your mind-set and belief system.

Hypnotherapy for Weight Loss

The success rate of using hypnotherapy for weight loss is widely accepted and increasingly successful in helping people to both lose and maintain weight loss. IT is important to understand that you will never be out of control, or be made to do anything that you feel uncomfortable about.

During a hypnotherapy session for Weight Loss:

  1. Your hypnotherapist will essentially behave as a coach/ mentor, whose aim will be to help you reach your goal and objectives. Firstly, there will be a n in depth consultation so that she can fully understand what hypnotherapy techniques will be the most helpful for you.

  2. You will then be relaxed in a heightened state of awareness (hypnotic trance), which will be very natural, pleasant, calm and relaxing.

  3. Once you are deeply relaxed and in a trance, your unconscious mind will be more open and receptive. At this point, your hypnotherapist may talk to you and ask you to speak back, depending on what technique they use. Typically, if they have using hypno-analysis to explore the root of your relationship with food, they may use various forms of regression.

  4. When your therapist is satisfied that you are ready to receive and accept positive suggestions, they will use carefully worded scripts, that have been specifically tailored to you to help change your beliefs in relation to food. This may not be on the first session.

  5. After a series of sessions (usually between 3-6), you will be ready to accept and believe new positive suggestions in relation to food and weight loss, and will replace your old negative beliefs and habits with more positive ones.

Will hypnotherapy for weight loss work for me?

It is important to remember that hypnotherapy is a complementary therapy, and therefore it is essential that it is used alongside a healthy exercise plan and food regime for it to be fully effective. The way in which hypnotherapy works is by changing your perceptions and beliefs about a number of things, including food and exercise. What is incredibly important that you are ready to make this commitment and are willing to work with your hypnotherapist for this to be successful;
